Business data licensing
Could your codebase earn licensing revenue?
A company-owned codebase may be a candidate for paid licensing without selling the product or transferring its IP outright. Relevance to a buyer’s use, rights to the included code and safe preparation matter more than a line-count-based estimate. AssetGate helps you explore that fit without uploading code.

What can be considered
- Production, internal or archived software you are authorised to describe.
- Source code with a known origin and a clear account of employee and contractor contributions.
- Tests and documentation can add context; unavailable or incomplete material should be disclosed.
What buyers may evaluate
- Domain-specific implementation and clearly described purpose.
- Readable structure, tests and documentation that support interpretation.
- Useful change context and known limitations.
- A defined package with dependency and contribution rights understood.
Rights and licensing restrictions
Do not treat an entire repository as wholly company-owned. Open-source components, licensed SDKs, contractor code and customer work may carry restrictions. Scan all intended history for secrets and personal data before any later sharing. A training licence is not automatically permission to redistribute source code or commercialise every derivative.
Licensing vs selling ownershipPublished data-partnership ranges mostly describe operational datasets, not codebases, so they aren't a guide to code licensing value. What drives licensing value →
How to explore the opportunity
- 01
Outline the software
Choose codebases in the free seller assessment and describe the business domain at a high level.
- 02
Identify review questions
See a qualitative read on history and ownership. Missing assignments or sensitive content are review items, not automatic rejection.
- 03
Scope a possible licence
If further discussion is worthwhile, define an authorised package and permitted uses before any sample or delivery.

Common questions
- Do I have to sell my software business?
- No. A scoped data or code licence is different from selling a product, company or all IP rights.
- Can an old or discontinued product qualify?
- It can be considered if relevant and properly owned. Discontinued status does not remove third-party restrictions.
- Should I upload a repository for a quote?
- No. The initial assessment needs no files, access tokens or credentials and does not produce a monetary quote.
