1. Reddit and Google: paying for continuous access
Reuters reported in February 2024 that the contract was worth about $60 million per year, citing one source. Reddit's IPO filing described AI licensing contracts worth $203 million in total across buyers, with continuous API access and regular data transfers.
Lesson: data that keeps growing and can be delivered on a schedule supports recurring revenue.
2. News Corp and OpenAI: multi-year and partly non-cash
The Wall Street Journal, owned by News Corp, reported the five-year agreement could be worth more than $250 million including cash and credits for OpenAI technology. Terms were not officially disclosed.
Lesson: check how much of a headline value is cash and how it is spread over time.
3. Shutterstock: early deals that grew
Shutterstock's CFO told Reuters in April 2024 that its initial deals with large tech firms ranged from $25 million to $50 million each, and most were later expanded.
Lesson: a first, scoped licence can lead to expansion if the data performs.
4. Freepik: a per-image archive price
Freepik told Reuters it licensed most of its 200 million image archive to two large tech companies at 2 to 4 cents per image.
Lesson: per-unit prices on very large archives can be low. Volume alone does not make a dataset valuable.
5. Stack Overflow and OpenAI: curated technical knowledge
Announced in May 2024, the partnership gives OpenAI access to vetted Stack Overflow content through its API and adds attribution in ChatGPT. Financial terms were not disclosed, so we do not state a value.
Lesson: attribution, quality signals and community vetting can be part of the commercial package.
6. Financial Times and OpenAI: licensing plus product collaboration
The FT announced in April 2024 a licensing agreement covering model improvement and attributed summaries in ChatGPT. Reuters noted the financial terms were not disclosed.
Lesson: deals can combine licensing fees with distribution, product access or collaboration.
What this means for smaller companies
None of these figures predicts what an individual business would receive. They do show the terms buyers care about: scope of use, exclusivity, updates, attribution and clear rights. Prepare those answers first.
